Abstract

Psychoactive substance abuse is a serious public health problem with widespread impacts, including mental disorders. Mental disorders due to consuming psychoactive substances can include depression, anxiety, psychosis and cognitive disorders. This literature review aims to understand the neuropsychological and psychosocial impact of psychoactive substances on mental disorders. Searches for scientific articles were carried out using various scientific databases, such as PubMed, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar. The keywords used in searching data as references are "psychoactive substances", "mental disorders", "neuropsychology", "psychosocial", and "literature review". The articles and data found were analyzed based on certain criteria regarding information about the impact of psychoactive substances on mental health. Research has shown that psychoactive substances can cause various serious neuropsychological and psychosocial changes, for example disturbing and triggering damage to brain structure, neurochemical changes, decreased cognitive function, depression and anxiety, psychosis, addiction, relationship problems, and loss of work.
