Abstract

This research is motivated by the 2021 indeks kesalehan sosial (IKS) survey of the Badan Litbang dan Diklat Kementrian Agama. The survey revealed that the ritual piety of religious communities in Indonesia is relatively high, with a national score of 8392, but social piety still needs improvement. The survey highlights the importance of the relationship between ritual and social piety in addressing humanitarian, environmental, and clean governance issues. However, despite the high levels of piety reported, Indonesia remains the 5th most corrupt country in Southeast Asia, raising questions about the role of religion in enhancing social piety and combating corruption. This study employs a qualitative method with an exploratory approach, examining the themes of seven-minute lectures during Ramadan 1445 H as a case study. Data were collected through observation, recordings, and documentation from mosques, print media, and social media during Ramadan. R. William Liddle's theory is used to understand the themes of the kultum, while Fazlur Rahman's theory is utilized to analyze the evolving discourse. The results indicate that the themes of the kultum delivered by preachers are highly diverse, covering aspects of worship, ethics, and daily life. These themes reflect efforts to improve the understanding and practice of religion among Muslims. However, there is a gap between the high levels of ritual piety and the low levels of social piety that need to be addressed to maximize the role of religion in national development. This research suggests the need for a more holistic approach in integrating the values of ritual and social piety to build a more just and integrity-driven society.
