The use of kohl (celak) in the Islamic perspective

Abstract

This study aims to look at the perspective and Islamic studies on the use of kohl. Kohl Eye
shadow is one of the traditional halal cosmetics that has a black color. The method used in this
research is a qualitative method with a literature review design. This research aims to reveal
the various benefits of kohl, as well as to attract the attention of women, especially Muslim
women who have begun to ignore the use of kohl and its benefits, then replace it with today's
kohl, which is eyeliner that only functions for beauty. Based on the results of the research, it
was found that in Islam using kohl is sunnah. While the type of kohl that is recommended and
used by the Prophet Muhammad is kohl made from itsmid. The kohl can be used for both men
and women. Especially for women, they are allowed to use kohl if they are among women, in
front of her husband or in front of her mahram. While in terms of health, eye kohl has various
benefits, such as for eye health, clearing vision, cleaning and removing bad elements in the
eyes, preventing eye infections, helping eyelash growth, and also as adornment.
