Pi’il Pesenggiri: An Entity of Lampung's Local Wisdom in Realizing Religious Moderation

Abstract

Culture is a symbol or identity of a region. Through customs and traditions, we can uncover the noble local wisdom that has been inherited from the ancestors of the Indonesian nation. Similarly, in Lampung, the local wisdom values that exist within the Lampung society serve as a strength in maintaining religious harmony. Lampung is a region known for its cultural and religious diversity, however this diversity can block and distrupt the harmony, cohesion, and social interrelation. The differences in these values can potentially lead to conflicts, indicating the vulnerability of the sense of togetherness that has been built. The Lampung community has a philosophy of life called "pi'il pesenggiri." Pi'il pesenggiri, as a local wisdom entity in Lampung, gains even greater value when connected to the purpose of religious moderation. The philosophy of pi'il pesenggiri has taught the community how to adapt and blend with the immigrant community in Lampung. The spirit offered by pi'il pesenggiri makes the Lampung community dynamic and capable of constantly integrating and uniting with the existing society, thus preserving and maintaining the agreed-upon norms and values.
